Wizards of the Coast is making waves in the Magic: The Gathering community with the surprise inclusion of the iconic 'Library of Alexandria' card in its latest expansion, 'Secrets of Strixhaven'. Despite its notorious history of being banned in most formats, this legendary card is making a digital comeback. The move has ignited discussions among players and collectors, as it offers a fresh opportunity to engage with a piece of Magic's rich past, albeit in a restricted, online-only environment.
The 'Library of Alexandria' first appeared in 'Arabian Nights', the very first expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1993. Known for its incredible power, allowing players to draw multiple cards under specific conditions, it quickly became a staple in competitive play. However, its dominance led to it being restricted or banned across numerous formats, including popular ones like Commander and Legacy. Consequently, physical copies of the card have become exceedingly rare and command high prices in the secondary market, often exceeding $1,000, making it more of a collector's item than a playable card for many.
The decision to bring back 'Library of Alexandria' within 'Secrets of Strixhaven' is particularly noteworthy due to its digital exclusivity. Players will only be able to acquire this reprinted version through digital packs on Magic: The Gathering Arena, the game's online platform. Furthermore, its playability is confined solely to Arena's Timeless format, which is unique for allowing virtually all cards to be legal. This digital-only approach bypasses the issues of scarcity and high cost associated with its physical counterpart, making it accessible to a broader audience of digital players.
During a press briefing, a representative from Wizards of the Coast explained the rationale behind this unexpected reprint. They highlighted that 'Strixhaven', being a magical academy, provided a thematic opportunity to revisit other academic or knowledge-focused settings within the Magic universe. The 'Library of Alexandria', with its historical significance and powerful association with knowledge, was deemed a natural and fitting choice for a 'special guest' card in this context. The company acknowledged the card's formidable power, stating it is 'extraordinarily good and is banned or restricted in every format', but expressed excitement for players to finally 'get to try it out' in the Timeless format.
This reintroduction of 'Library of Alexandria' serves as a strategic move by Wizards of the Coast to merge the game's rich history with its evolving digital future. By offering this coveted card exclusively through Magic: The Gathering Arena and restricting its use to the Timeless format, they provide a novel way for players to experience its power without disrupting the balance of established paper formats. The 'Secrets of Strixhaven' expansion, featuring this iconic reprint, is set to launch on Arena on April 21, followed by a worldwide release on April 24, inviting players to delve into a blend of past and present Magic lore.
