Joy Behar's Controversial Exit During Carrie Underwood's 'The View' Interview

Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

During a recent broadcast of the popular talk show "The View," co-host Joy Behar unexpectedly departed from the discussion panel just before a highly anticipated interview with music icon Carrie Underwood. This departure has ignited considerable debate, especially given Behar's prior public disapproval of Underwood's decision to perform at Donald Trump's second presidential inauguration. The incident was further complicated by previous social media criticism from former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who publicly defended Underwood against Behar's remarks.

The sequence of events unfolded when "The View" returned from a commercial break. Both Joy Behar and fellow co-host Sara Haines were visibly absent from the "Hot Topics" table, leaving the remaining hosts to conduct the interview with the "American Idol" judges, including Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood. Although the show often sees hosts stepping away to accommodate large guest panels, Behar's absence drew particular attention due to her established contentious stance regarding Underwood's political affiliations. In early 2025, Behar vocalized her opposition to Underwood's participation in the inauguration ceremony, prompting a strong rebuke from Hasselbeck, who subsequently labeled Behar's comments as "Un-American" in online posts, despite Behar never using that specific term.

A source close to the show confirmed that Behar's temporary exit was a "production decision," aimed at managing the number of individuals at the table during the multi-guest interview. However, the timing inevitably linked her departure to the lingering controversy. Despite their past clashes, Behar and Hasselbeck, who temporarily returned to "The View" earlier this year, did not publicly address their previous dispute during Hasselbeck's return, leaving the underlying tensions largely unresolved. Behar later rejoined the panel at the end of the live broadcast and was scheduled to appear on the program's companion podcast, "Behind the Table."

This event underscores the intricate dynamics within media personalities and the broader societal conversations surrounding political engagement. It serves as a reminder that public figures, by their very nature, navigate a landscape where personal opinions and professional roles can frequently intersect, leading to public scrutiny and debate. Ultimately, such occurrences can foster greater awareness of differing perspectives and encourage respectful dialogue, even amidst disagreement.
