The recent triumph of the United States men's national soccer team at the World Cup has not only marked a significant sporting achievement but has also rewritten the history books for soccer viewership in the nation. The team's first knockout stage victory in nearly a quarter-century captivated an enormous audience, setting new benchmarks for both English and Spanish-language broadcasts. This surge in interest underscores the growing popularity of soccer across the United States and highlights the significant impact of major international tournaments.

On Wednesday, the U.S. men's team secured a memorable win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a victory that resonated deeply with fans and translated into exceptional television ratings. Preliminary data from Nielsen indicates that the English-language broadcast on Fox attracted an average of 24.43 million viewers. This figure represents an all-time high for any soccer match televised in English in the United States, surpassing previous records. The exact number could still see a slight adjustment as final ratings are compiled, but its significance remains undisputed.

Adding to this remarkable achievement, Telemundo and Peacock's Spanish-language coverage of the match brought in an additional 9.1 million viewers. When combined with the Fox audience, the total viewership reached an astounding 33.53 million. This combined figure unequivocally breaks the previous record for a soccer match in the U.S., which stood at 26.7 million viewers. That prior record was jointly held by the 2015 Women's World Cup final between the U.S. and Japan (broadcast on Fox and Telemundo) and the 2014 men's final featuring Germany and Argentina (on ABC and Univision).

The success wasn't limited to the U.S. team's game. Just a day prior, Telemundo and Peacock also established a new Spanish-language viewership record. Their broadcast of Mexico's 2-0 triumph over Ecuador garnered an average of 18.9 million viewers. Notably, over half of this audience, specifically 9.7 million, engaged with the match through streaming platforms, indicating a significant shift in viewing habits. Fox's English broadcast of the same game attracted 10.43 million viewers, culminating in a combined total of 29.33 million.

The U.S. versus Bosnia and Herzegovina match on Fox witnessed its peak viewership between 9:45 and 10 p.m. ET, with 31.88 million viewers tuning in as the U.S. maintained a 2-0 lead despite being a player down for the final 25 minutes. This intense period followed a controversial red card issued to forward Folarin Balogun in the 64th minute after a foul on Bosnia and Herzegovina's Tarik Muharemovic, adding drama to an already historic game.

Both Fox Sports and the Telemundo/Peacock partnership have observed substantial increases in their World Cup ratings compared to the 2022 tournament. While some growth was anticipated due to the current World Cup being hosted across North America (Canada, Mexico, and the United States), the audience for both English and Spanish broadcasts has more than doubled since 2022, signaling an unprecedented level of engagement.

The U.S. men's team is now preparing for their next challenge, facing Belgium in the round of 16. This highly anticipated match is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, with fans eagerly awaiting another potentially record-breaking broadcast.

The recent surge in soccer viewership, particularly surrounding the U.S. men's national team's performance, signifies a pivotal moment for the sport in America. The record-setting numbers achieved by Fox and Telemundo/Peacock not only demonstrate a heightened national interest but also lay a strong foundation for future growth. These impressive ratings, especially when factoring in the significant contribution of streaming, underscore the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting and the increasing mainstream appeal of soccer.
