The collaborative screenwriting program from HBO Max and WBD Access is set to return for its second installment at the Series Mania Institute, now rebranded as "Script Engine." This renewed initiative signifies a commitment to cultivating emerging talent within the European television landscape. Its primary goal is to identify and nurture mid-level screenwriters, providing them with the resources and guidance to develop innovative, culturally relevant series for HBO Max's European audience.
This year's program will specifically target writers from France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. Each selected participant will embark on an intensive four-month journey, engaging in high-level training, specialized regional coaching, and personalized one-on-one mentorship. The curriculum is meticulously designed to refine their creative voices, enhance their professional standing, and enable them to produce projects that truly resonate with the distinct cultural nuances and storytelling priorities of their local markets. The program's culmination involves a crucial presentation where writers will showcase their developed series concepts to HBO Max regional executives, followed by a six-month first-look period for potential development.
Grace Moss, VP of Inclusion Pipeline Programs at WBD Access, expressed enthusiasm for the program's expansion, highlighting the growing demand for authentic, local narratives. This sentiment was echoed by Pierre Ziemniak, Director of Programs at Series Mania Institute, who emphasized the institute's role as a vital hub for audiovisual professionals. The success of the inaugural program, which saw French screenwriter Julie-Anna Grignon develop her pilot "The Hum," underscores the program's effectiveness in fostering creative talent. The return of Script Engine is a testament to the power of investing in storytelling, nurturing diverse voices, and enriching the global entertainment landscape with narratives that reflect a multitude of experiences and perspectives, ultimately contributing to a more vibrant and interconnected world.
