SCL Awards Highlight Musical Excellence Across Film and Television

On the evening of February 6, 2026, at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles, the 7th annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards, masterfully hosted by Kevin Bacon and Emmy-winning composer Michael Bacon, honored the industry's most brilliant musical talents. The night's biggest winner, the illustrious composer Ludwig Göransson, received two prestigious awards for his exceptional contributions to the film "Sinners," including its compelling score and the captivating original song "I Lied to You," a collaborative masterpiece with Raphael Saadiq. Adding to the night's triumphs, EJAE and Mark Sonnenblick were celebrated for their outstanding original song "Golden" from "KPop Demon Hunters," recognized in the comedy or musical category.

Beyond these notable wins, the awards recognized excellence across various media. Bryce Dessner's evocative score for "Train Dreams" earned him the award for outstanding original score for an independent film. In the television sphere, Theodore Shapiro was lauded for his remarkable score in the series "Severance," while Cristóbal Tapia de Veer captivated audiences with his original title sequence for "The White Lotus." Interactive media was also honored, with Austin Wintory receiving an award for his work on "Sword Of The Sea." The evening also saw Chin-shan Chang acknowledged with the David Raksin Award for Emerging Talent for "Laws Of Man."

A deeply moving part of the ceremony was a special tribute marking the 50th anniversary of the iconic film "Rocky." This segment featured a spirited musical performance led by the Academy Award-winning composer Bill Conti, whose genius crafted the memorable scores for five films in the franchise, including the indelible theme "Gonna Fly Now." The event further paid homage to departed artists with an 'In Memoriam' segment, beautifully delivered by Melissa Manchester, who performed her Oscar-nominated song "I’ll Never Say Goodbye" from the 1979 film "The Promise." This segment notably featured a tribute to Alan Bergman, who passed in 2025.

The SCL Awards serve as a vital platform, not only for celebrating the current luminaries in composition and lyricism but also for preserving and honoring the rich heritage of musical storytelling in visual media. The event underscored the profound impact of music in enhancing narratives and connecting with audiences on a deeper emotional level, reinforcing the indispensable role of composers and lyricists in the creative landscape.
