Finji CEO: The Indie Games Industry is in a 'Survival Era' as Funding Dries Up

Rebekah Saltsman, the CEO of the indie developer and publisher Finji, declared that the independent gaming sector has entered a "survival era." This period, she noted, is not marked by an enjoyable crafting-survival gameplay experience but rather a challenging financial climate that has persisted for far longer than many realize. Saltsman highlighted that for years, the industry has operated with a prevailing sentiment of "just wait, it's going to be better in [a year]," a cycle that constantly pushes optimistic projections further into the future.

Saltsman observed that this "just survive until" mentality has been prevalent for about five years, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While major publishers are navigating a turbulent landscape of acquisitions and workforce reductions, independent studios are struggling to secure financial backing. She emphasized that what was once considered a negligible sum for large corporations—such as a quarter of a million dollars—is now a significant hurdle for indie developers. Companies are reportedly reluctant to invest in projects that don't promise substantial returns, often favoring multimillion-dollar ventures over smaller, potentially impactful ones. Saltsman likened the massive successes of games like Balatro, Vampire Survivors, and Stardew Valley to rare "lightning strikes," underscoring their unpredictable nature.

Saltsman believes this trend is creating a void in the middle tier of indie games, leading to a loss of innovative projects that might not be financial blockbusters but could profoundly influence the industry. She frequently contemplates the titles that were never developed because they couldn't secure $100,000 in funding, and how such games, even if generating only $500,000, could be life-changing for their creators. As the head of a small indie publisher, Saltsman's primary focus is on ensuring her developers can earn enough to create their next game, emphasizing that profitability is crucial for sustaining their creative endeavors.

The current landscape for indie game developers highlights the importance of perseverance and strategic decision-making. Despite significant challenges, the passion for creation and innovation remains a driving force. Supporting independent creators is vital for fostering diverse experiences and pushing the boundaries of what games can achieve, ensuring a vibrant and imaginative future for the entire gaming community.
