The mobile and PC gacha title, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, is ceasing operations just under three years after its launch. This decision, announced by Square Enix, highlights the challenges of sustaining live-service games with mixed community reception.

The Unexpected Closure of a Recent Final Fantasy Title

Square Enix has declared the impending shutdown of Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis. The game, available on both Steam and mobile platforms, will officially go offline on October 6. The sale of Red Crystal, its in-game currency, has already been suspended, marking the beginning of its final phase. This announcement comes as a surprise to many, especially given the game's relatively recent release.

Developer's Statement on Discontinuation

In an official statement regarding the cessation of service, Square Enix expressed regret for any disappointment caused. The company emphasized its commitment to delivering "the best possible experience for our players" since the game's inception in 2023. However, without specifying particular reasons, the developer indicated that it has become "difficult to continue doing so," leading to the decision to terminate the service. This often points to a combination of factors, including financial viability and player engagement.

Player Reception and Market Performance

A significant contributing factor to the game's early demise appears to be its lukewarm reception. On Steam, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis garnered a "mixed" rating, reflecting player dissatisfaction primarily focused on its monetization strategies and repetitive grind mechanics inherent to gacha games. Although mobile versions on Android and iOS received comparatively better reviews, comprehensive player statistics for these platforms remain undisclosed. The PC player base has shown a consistent, albeit sometimes uneven, decrease since its debut, further indicating a struggle to retain interest.

The Extensive Lore of Ever Crisis

Mollie Taylor, a prominent Final Fantasy enthusiast at PC Gamer, previously described Ever Crisis as an ambitious project that aimed to weave together the expansive narrative of the Final Fantasy 7 universe. This included storylines from the original game, the Advent Children film, and spin-off titles like Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. While the narrative scope was vast, the implementation of gacha mechanics likely overshadowed its storytelling potential for many players.

Final Stages and Data Management

Leading up to the October 6 shutdown, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will continue to host in-game events, as detailed in a final roadmap released by Square Enix. The company also confirmed that upon the server closure, all user accounts and personal information will be permanently deleted. This measure is intended to safeguard player data once the game is no longer operational, ensuring privacy in the wake of its discontinuation.
