In a landmark decision for public health, the European Commission has granted approval to Novo Nordisk A/S's Wegovy pill. This oral formulation of semaglutide, dosed at 25 mg daily, is now authorized for adults diagnosed with obesity or those classified as overweight who also present with at least one related health complication. This milestone positions Wegovy as the inaugural GLP-1 receptor agonist in tablet form cleared for weight management across all European Union member nations.

The regulatory nod extends to individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or more alongside one or several weight-related comorbidities. The treatment is intended to be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and an increase in physical activity. This European approval follows a positive recommendation issued by the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use in May 2026 and represents the fifth such regulatory clearance globally, building upon previous authorizations in the United States, the U.K., the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. Novo Nordisk has also secured approval for a 7.2 mg injectable version of Wegovy and anticipates a phased introduction of the treatment into additional countries during the latter half of 2026.

The efficacy supporting this approval stems from the comprehensive OASIS clinical trial program, notably the OASIS 4 study. This research evaluated the 25 mg once-daily oral semaglutide in adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related comorbidity. Study participants receiving the oral semaglutide demonstrated an average weight reduction of approximately 17%, a stark contrast to the 3% seen in the placebo group when both were combined with lifestyle modifications. Remarkably, about one-third of those treated with the medication achieved a substantial weight loss of 20% or more. Furthermore, the safety and tolerability profile of the oral semaglutide was found to be consistent with that of the established injectable variant, with discontinuation rates due to adverse events being 6.9% for the oral treatment compared to 5.9% for the placebo.
