In a strategic move to amplify its global sports presence, Disney has announced the significant expansion of ESPN's streaming availability through Disney+. This initiative sees ESPN's rich sports programming now accessible to a broader international audience across numerous European and Asia-Pacific territories, marking a new chapter in how sports fans worldwide can engage with premier athletic content.

ESPN's Global Play: Unveiling New Sporting Horizons on Disney+

On April 7, 2026, Disney officially rolled out ESPN on its Disney+ platform, extending its reach to an additional 53 countries and regions spanning Europe and the Asia-Pacific. This major launch includes key Asian markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. With this expansion, ESPN's global footprint now encompasses approximately 100 markets, reinforcing its commitment to sports enthusiasts worldwide.

The newly available service promises a diverse array of sports content. While initial offerings will differ by region, the platform is set to feature thousands of live events over the coming year. This includes prominent leagues and competitions such as the NBA and NHL (starting from the 2026-27 season), NCAA events, and the College Football Playoffs. Additionally, subscribers will gain access to ESPN's critically acclaimed documentary series, "30 for 30," enriching their viewing experience with compelling sports narratives.

This strategic rollout builds upon Disney+'s existing sports portfolio in Europe, which already boasts popular content like the UEFA Women’s Champions League, LALIGA in the U.K. and Ireland, as well as the Copa del Rey, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League, and DFB Pokal in the Nordic regions. For Asia-Pacific markets, a specially curated selection of English-language ESPN sports programming will be introduced, featuring flagship events like KeSPA’s Esports Championships Asia Jinju 2026 and the 2026 LoL KeSPA Cup.

Alisa Bowen, President of Disney+, emphasized the importance of live sports events in the platform’s content library. She expressed excitement about building on existing success with sports fans and expanding ESPN’s reach in Europe and APAC, further diversifying Disney+'s local sports rights portfolio globally. Freddy Rolón, Head of Global Sports & Talent Office at ESPN, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the expansion as an exciting next step in delivering world-class content and fostering deeper connections with fans globally. Beyond its streaming presence, ESPN continues to operate 50 linear networks, reaching audiences across 130 countries and territories.

This significant expansion by Disney, integrating ESPN's extensive sports coverage into Disney+, truly illustrates the evolving landscape of sports media consumption. It underscores the increasing demand for diverse, accessible, and high-quality sports content on streaming platforms. For viewers, this means unparalleled access to a wider variety of sports from around the globe, blurring the lines between traditional broadcasting and digital streaming. This move not only solidifies Disney's position in the competitive streaming market but also sets a new standard for how sports content can be delivered and consumed internationally, fostering a more connected global sports community.
