Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX) is currently navigating a period of intense scrutiny from short sellers, with an estimated $25 billion wagered against its stock. This substantial bearish sentiment, primarily fueled by impending lockup expirations, has prompted a direct response from CEO Elon Musk. As the company prepares to release its inaugural quarterly earnings report, the financial world watches closely to see how this pivotal event will impact the volatile market dynamics surrounding the aerospace giant.
Following its landmark Initial Public Offering (IPO) in June, which saw SPCX briefly touch a $2.1 trillion valuation, the stock has become the most heavily shorted newly listed company ever tracked by Wall Street. Short interest has skyrocketed from approximately 40 million shares a month ago to over 206 million shares today, now representing about 32% of the tradable float. This aggressive shorting strategy is predominantly driven by the structured release of shares post-IPO.
Unlike traditional lockup agreements, SpaceX adopted a staggered unlock schedule, releasing tranches of shares at various intervals. The most significant release is slated for August 6, two trading days after the company's first earnings report on August 4, when 911.5 million shares will become unconditionally available for trading. An additional 455.8 million shares, valued at around $62 billion, are tied to a conditional release, contingent on the stock closing above $175.50 for five out of ten trading days prior to the earnings announcement. Given that the shares were trading at $123.54 as of July 21, a 40% decline from its June 16 peak of $225.64, this conditional threshold appears increasingly out of reach, making the unconditional tranche the immediate focus for investors.
Analysts at S3 Partners attribute the surge in short-selling interest directly to this recent share-price depreciation and the looming lockup expirations. However, Elon Musk has publicly challenged this bearish outlook on X, asserting that companies maintaining significant short positions in SpaceX will ultimately face dire consequences. He famously declared, “The survival probability of firms who maintain a significant short position in SpaceX over time is very low. I said SpaceX will be worth more than Earth if we achieve our goals. Obviously true.”
The upcoming earnings report on August 4 marks a critical juncture for SpaceX. It will offer the first comprehensive look at the company's financial performance since its public debut, serving as a crucial test for both its advocates and detractors. The outcome will not only influence investor sentiment but also determine the immediate trajectory of SPCX's stock as the market digests the influx of newly tradable shares.
The confluence of high short interest and a substantial share unlock creates a high-stakes environment for SpaceX. While aggressive short sellers are taking on considerable risk, savvy traders may opt to observe the post-earnings supply inflow before committing to long positions. This cautious approach would allow for short-term selling pressures to dissipate, potentially enabling strategic investors to acquire a stake in this innovative company at a more favorable valuation.
