DirecTV Study Reveals Local News Decline Due to TV Station Consolidation

A recent examination initiated by DirecTV and submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) indicates that increasing consolidation among television station groups is causing a significant decline in the availability and diversity of local news content. This trend, marked by the formation of multiple station ownership structures within single markets, often results in merged news operations rather than maintaining distinct journalistic entities. The study underscores concerns that such practices lead to fewer independent newsrooms, reduced variety in reporting, and a potential decrease in the overall quality of local journalism, thereby limiting the public's access to comprehensive local information.

DirecTV's Analysis Uncovers Diminished Local News Landscape

On February 24, 2026, DirecTV submitted a comprehensive report to the FCC, spearheaded by attorneys Michael Nilsson and Annick M. Banoun. This filing highlighted a concerning pattern: when broadcasters expand their holdings to include second, third, or even fourth stations in a given local market, they invariably merge news operations. This consolidation results in a single newsroom serving multiple stations, effectively eliminating the distinct newsgathering capabilities that previously existed. DirecTV's attorneys emphasized that this is not merely a theoretical assertion, citing evidence from Nexstar's past acquisitions where such consolidation has been a consistent outcome across its various duopolies and triopolies. The study focused on Nielsen's Designated Market Areas (DMAs) where major 'Big Four' affiliates (excluding ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox owned-and-operated stations) are under shared management. The findings identified 98 duopolies, 15 triopolies, and 3 quadropolies. The report specifically omitted combinations involving non-Big Four affiliates, such as The CW or My Network TV, and 'sidecar operations,' suggesting that including these would likely reveal an even more pronounced reduction in local news diversity. DirecTV's research further demonstrated that these co-managed stations almost universally consolidate their online news platforms (90.5% shared), employ a single news director (98.2% shared), and utilize shared journalists and anchors (97.3% shared) across all their outlets, rather than operating them as separate journalistic entities. The conclusion drawn from this extensive data is that broadcaster consolidation directly diminishes competition, output, and the overall quality of local news. Consequently, DirecTV is urging the FCC to reject proposals that would further facilitate such consolidations, thereby preventing a greater erosion of local news content.

This revealing study prompts important considerations about the future of local journalism and its vital role in civic engagement. The trend of media consolidation, as highlighted by DirecTV's findings, suggests that economic efficiencies for broadcasting groups may come at the cost of informed local communities. A robust and diverse local news ecosystem is crucial for holding local power accountable, fostering community identity, and ensuring that citizens have access to varied perspectives on issues directly affecting their lives. Regulators like the FCC face the challenge of balancing economic interests with the public good, and this report serves as a critical reminder of the potential long-term consequences when market forces lead to a less vibrant media landscape. It encourages a broader discussion on how to safeguard and promote independent local journalism in an era of increasing media ownership concentration.
