Department M, a burgeoning production entity, has finalized an agreement to acquire a significant portion of Neon, an independent film distribution company. This transaction, initially reported in February as being under discussion, marks a pivotal moment for both organizations within the entertainment landscape.

Leadership Realignments and New Roles at Neon

Following the acquisition, Tom Quinn, the founder of Neon, will maintain his position as CEO. Michael Schaefer, a partner at Department M, will assume the role of Chief Content Officer at Neon. Concurrently, Mike Larocca, another Department M partner, will join Neon's board of directors while continuing his responsibilities at Department M. Jeff Deutchman will remain as Neon's President of Acquisition, Production, and Development for film, reporting directly to Schaefer. Additionally, Carina Sposato from Department M has been appointed as Executive Vice President of Television at Neon, also reporting to Schaefer, indicating a strategic focus on television expansion. The Friedkin Group, existing backers of Neon, will continue as major shareholders and board members.

The company recently secured the distribution rights for Luca Guadagnino's 'Artificial' following its departure from Amazon MGM Studios, further cementing its role as a key player in acquiring critically acclaimed independent cinema.

Department M's Founding and Industry Background

Department M was co-founded by Schaefer and Larocca in early 2024, supported by private investors including Forta Advisors. Both founders bring extensive industry experience: Larocca previously co-founded AGBO with the Russo Brothers, contributing to projects like 'Extraction' and 'The Gray Man,' while Schaefer, an Oscar nominee for 'The Martian,' spent seven years at New Regency and worked at Ridley Scott's Scott Free. Their current projects include 'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle' and Steven Soderbergh's 'The Christophers,' with the latter having already been acquired by Neon after the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.
