Danny McBride Revitalizes G.I. Joe Franchise with Suspenseful Reboot

Amy Hennig

Renowned video game writer and director, known for her narrative work on the "Uncharted" series.

Danny McBride, renowned for his work on television, is now channeling his creative energies into resurrecting the G.I. Joe film series for Paramount Pictures. This marks a significant pivot for the franchise, which has seen varied success in its cinematic outings. McBride's involvement signals a fresh direction, aiming to inject new life and a distinct tone into the beloved military action property.

During a recent podcast appearance, McBride shared insights into his approach, revealing a deep personal connection to G.I. Joe from his youth, even surpassing his affection for other major franchises like Star Wars. Initially, his pitch to Paramount revolved around the Dreadnoks, a notorious mercenary faction within the G.I. Joe universe. However, Paramount, seeking a full-scale revitalization, tasked him with developing a comprehensive reboot for the core G.I. Joe narrative.

Collaborating with his writing partners from his recent TV success, McBride has crafted a script that has reportedly garnered enthusiastic approval from Paramount. His vision for the reboot is notably different from previous adaptations; it eschews comedy in favor of a suspenseful, action-driven narrative. The story is set to follow Duke and a contingent of Joes, with a crucial plot point centering on Springfield, a town secretly under the sway of Cobra, the G.I. Joe team's perennial adversaries.

This upcoming film will be the first G.I. Joe cinematic endeavor since the underwhelming 2021 release and is envisioned as a standalone reboot, separate from any potential crossover events hinted at in other franchises. While specific details and release dates are yet to be officially announced, the creative direction under McBride promises a grounded and thrilling experience for audiences. As development progresses, fans eager for G.I. Joe content can explore existing media, such as the beat 'em up game, while awaiting further news on this highly anticipated project.
