Daniel Neeson Undergoes Heart Surgery for Congenital Condition
Guillermo del ToroOscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.
Daniel Neeson, the son of celebrated actors Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson, recently shared his personal journey of undergoing heart surgery. At 29 years old, Neeson revealed on Instagram that he had a procedure to address a congenital heart condition known as Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV). This condition, present in about 2% of the population, involves the aortic valve having two leaflets instead of the usual three. His candid account highlights the significance of being proactive about one's health and maintaining a resilient outlook in the face of medical challenges.
Neeson's condition, Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), often remains unnoticed for years before it starts to impact valve function or cause aortic enlargement. Despite its commonality, many individuals are unaware they have it. For Neeson, regular biannual cardiology check-ups were a lifelong routine to monitor this inherent heart defect. These consistent medical evaluations became crucial as he began experiencing significant left ventricle dilation and aortic enlargement, signaling the need for intervention. He humorously noted that he "drew the early-bird straw," indicating that some individuals with BAV undergo surgery later in life.
Reflecting on his experience, Neeson spoke about the surreal realization that a major health challenge had been developing within him his entire life without any dramatic symptoms. He stressed that this situation required a shift from his usual approach of controlling his environment to one of surrender and presence. He expressed immense gratitude and trust in his world-class surgeons and nurses, as well as in the broader universe, believing that even when outcomes are beyond control, one's mindset can always be managed. Instead of attempting to be "fearless," Neeson focused on embracing healing energy and staying as present as possible throughout the process, a strategy he found to be more effective.
Neeson extended his heartfelt thanks to his medical team for their exceptional care, and to his family and wife, Natalie Ackerman, whom he married in September 2025, for their unwavering support. His recovery journey, he shared, is characterized by its beauty, patience, and rewarding aspects. He urged everyone to advocate for their own health, listen to their bodies, and seek cardiological evaluations, even in the absence of known heart defects. Above all, he encouraged embracing the present moment and living without fear, trusting that life's journey unfolds with support from the universe when one learns to navigate it harmoniously.
