Crafting the Animated World: The Genesis of 'Dispatch's' Unique Visuals

Legendary game designer at Nintendo, creator of Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

The highly acclaimed game 'Dispatch' stands out not just for its engaging narrative and gameplay, but particularly for its striking visual style. This article explores the unconventional creative journey undertaken by AdHoc Studio's co-founders, Nick Herman and Dennis Lenart, to define the game's unique animated aesthetic, overcoming obstacles by embracing innovative approaches and unexpected collaborations.

Where Pixel Art Meets Pixar: The Genesis of Dispatch's Visual Identity

The Distinctive Aesthetic of 'Dispatch'

Many commend 'Dispatch' for its standout visual presentation, which evokes the charm of classic superhero cartoons. Unlike other titles, it masterfully blends nostalgic animation with mature themes, setting it apart in the gaming landscape.

Initial Artistic Challenges and the 'Shotgun Approach'

At the outset, the development team faced a significant hurdle: a lack of in-house artists. To address this, they experimented with various talented individuals in what co-founder Nick Herman described as a "shotgun approach." This period of artistic exploration aimed to balance the game's dramatic and comedic elements effectively.

Inspiration from Unconventional Sources: Art Station to Apple Juice Commercials

When traditional methods proved unfruitful, the team turned to platforms like Art Station, where they discovered artist Lap Pun Cheung, whose concepts became the bedrock of 'Dispatch's' art style. The search for an animation studio also led them down an unusual path, ultimately finding Igloo Studios in Thailand, a team recognized for their impressive apple juice commercials, which surprisingly resonated with the desired aesthetic for 'Dispatch'.

Embracing Risk: Partnering with an Emerging Studio

The decision to collaborate with Igloo Studios, an unproven entity in game development, was a calculated risk. As Dennis Lenart put it, "We knew working with them would be a risk... but we felt like we'd be in it together." This shared commitment proved crucial in navigating the complexities of bringing their ambitious vision to life.

Transforming Vision into Reality: A Journey of Trial and Error

The production process significantly deviated from their previous work at Telltale Games, shifting towards creating an experience akin to an animated TV series. Despite numerous challenges and a learning curve, the unique blend of 3D characters against 2D backgrounds, a style AdHoc was determined to pursue, ultimately gelled perfectly, culminating in the critically lauded visual design of 'Dispatch'.
