Combating Childhood Hunger: Food Lion's Summer Initiative Makes a Difference

Michele Norris

Former NPR host and founder of The Race Card Project, focusing on race and identity in America.

Every summer, when school kitchens shut down, many children face uncertainty about their next meal. Recognizing this challenge, Food Lion has launched its annual initiative aimed at filling the gap in food access for vulnerable families. Since 2019, the program has contributed over 97 million meals to children and households across the communities it serves.

The effort is part of a broader mission by Food Lion Feeds, the company’s hunger-relief platform, which began in 2014. Through strategic partnerships with suppliers and direct engagement with shoppers, the retailer raises critical funds to support local food banks and charitable organizations. Customers can contribute by purchasing reusable bags during checkout or making voluntary donations at the register, both in-store and online.

What makes this campaign especially impactful is the participation of major food brands that match customer contributions, doubling the reach of every purchase. In addition to financial support, Food Lion employees volunteer their time to assist food distribution efforts, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most. With a long-term goal of donating 3 billion meals by 2032, the company continues to lead in the fight against food insecurity.

Hunger should never be a barrier to a child's growth or well-being. Through community collaboration and sustained commitment, initiatives like these shine a light on how businesses can play a powerful role in uplifting society. Every small act of generosity adds up to real change—nourishing not just bodies, but futures.
