A classic video game is making a leap from consoles to animation. Playground Productions, a company dedicated to children's and family entertainment, is developing the popular 'Backyard Baseball' video game franchise into an animated television series, titled 'Backyard Sports'.

The upcoming animated show, 'Backyard Sports: The Animated Series', boasts an impressive lineup of voice talent. Confirmed cast members include Tiffany Haddish, who will voice Kiesha Phillips; Donald Faison as Dante Robinson; and Christopher Mintz-Plasse lending his voice to Dmitri Petrovich. The series will also feature Arturo Castro as the star player Pablo Sanchez, Utkarsh Ambudkar as Achmed Khan, Deborah Baker Jr. as Kimmy Eckman, Michael Vlamis as Tony Delvecchio, Ashleigh Crystal Hairston as Sunny Day, Will Neff as Mr. Clanky, Vincent Tong as Kenny Kawaguchi, Joey Rudman as Marky Dubois, and Lindsay Barnett as Vinnie. The original 'Backyard Baseball' game, which first launched in 1997, featured over 30 unique "Backyard Kids" characters. Later versions of the game even included animated depictions of famous Major League Baseball players like Derek Jeter and Randy Johnson.

The announcement for 'Backyard Sports: The Animated Series' was made during the "Backyard Sports Returns" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, shortly after the new-generation 'Backyard Baseball' game was released on July 9th. Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett serves as the executive producer for the animated series, with Chris Waters as the showrunner. Adam Aseraf and Sarah Nevada Smith are head writers and co-executive producers. The series is planned for 20 episodes, each approximately 11 minutes in length. Both the updated 'Backyard Baseball' game and its animated counterpart are part of Playground Productions' expanding 'Backyardiverse'. Lindsay Barnett expressed excitement about the series, stating that the 'Backyard Sports' characters have inspired generations, and their stories naturally extend beyond the game itself as the franchise grows with new game releases on platforms like Steam and future consoles.

This venture into animated storytelling marks a significant evolution for the 'Backyard Sports' franchise, bringing its beloved characters and engaging narratives to a broader audience. By embracing new mediums and incorporating contemporary talent, the series aims to reignite the magic of backyard sportsmanship and teamwork, promoting positive values and imaginative play for families and children everywhere. The expansion of this universe reflects a vibrant dedication to fostering creativity and healthy competition.
