Following the tumultuous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red is adopting a new development philosophy for The Witcher 4, emphasizing simultaneous multi-platform optimization. The studio's co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, revealed that the forthcoming Witcher title is being built to run seamlessly across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X from the earliest stages of development. This strategic shift is a direct response to the performance challenges faced by Cyberpunk 2077 on last-generation consoles, a situation that led to its temporary removal from the PlayStation Store and ongoing scrutiny. By integrating cross-platform compatibility from the ground up, CD Projekt Red aims to prevent similar issues and deliver a polished experience across all target systems.

The initial release of Cyberpunk 2077 was a stark lesson for CD Projekt Red. While the PC version, despite its share of bugs, was generally well-received, its performance on PlayStation 4 was so problematic that Sony temporarily delisted the game. Even upon its return, a disclaimer warned players about potential issues. Nowakowski attributed these difficulties to a misguided belief that scaling down a PC-centric game for older console hardware would be a minor hurdle. He also acknowledged that the studio had, perhaps, become overconfident after the successful launch of The Witcher 3, leading to a false sense of security regarding Cyberpunk's readiness.

Nowakowski explained that the studio previously had a tendency to defer addressing minor technical shortfalls, assuming they could be resolved later. This approach proved detrimental for Cyberpunk 2077, as small issues accumulated into significant problems. For The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has implemented a more rigorous development process. If any platform encounters a technical snag, the team now halts progress to rectify it immediately, rather than pushing forward with the hope of fixing it at a later stage. This ensures consistent quality across all versions throughout development.

This revised development strategy aims to ensure that The Witcher 4 maintains performance parity across all planned platforms. As Nowakowski proudly stated, one can currently boot up The Witcher 4 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, and it will run smoothly on all of them. While ensuring a game simply "runs" might seem like a basic expectation, it's a crucial reassurance from CD Projekt Red, especially after the Cyberpunk 2077 debacle. With no official release date yet, and a targeted launch in 2028, fans will be hoping this meticulous approach yields a much smoother and more enjoyable launch for the next installment in The Witcher series.
