Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

Catalina Sopelana, a prominent Spanish actress gaining recognition from popular Netflix series, is set to lead the cast of the upcoming dramedy 'Video Store 2001.' This feature film, an expanded version of a critically acclaimed short, has secured Sideral Cinema as a co-producer, highlighting its growing industry appeal. The project is poised for presentation at the Málaga Festival's MAFF meetings, a crucial step in its development and securing further collaborations, with production anticipated to commence in late 2026 or early 2027. This collaboration signifies a significant stride for the film, blending established talent with strategic industry support.

Sopelana's impressive performance record includes a key role in 'The Gardener,' a Netflix global chart-topper in April of last year within the non-English show category. Her lead role in 'The Crystal Cuckoo,' a crime thriller, also saw significant success, maintaining a spot in Netflix's global non-English Top 10 for four weeks following its premiere in November. Her consistent presence in successful international productions underscores her rising star status and makes her a compelling choice for the lead in 'Video Store 2001.'

The feature-length 'Videoland 2001' is being spearheaded by Los Hermanos Polo Films, a Valencia-based production company led by brothers Guillermo and Javier Polo. Their participation in the Málaga Festival Fund & Co-Production Event (MAFF), which begins on March 10, aims to attract additional partners and solidify the film's production framework. The original Feroz Award-winning short, also starring Sopelana, served as a proof of concept and garnered considerable attention on the festival circuit, laying a strong foundation for this feature adaptation.

Guillermo Polo, who is directing and co-wrote the screenplay with Guillermo Guerrero, frames 'Video Store 2001' as a narrative deeply rooted in the early 2000s. This era marked a significant shift in viewing habits and a decline in traditional cinema communities, providing a rich backdrop for the film's themes. The story centers on Mila, a 28-year-old portrayed by Sopelana, who inherits her father's video store. As a nearby Blockbuster threatens to overshadow her business, Mila grapples with the challenges of preserving her legacy and identity. The video store eventually transforms into a haven for a diverse group of individuals, forcing Mila to confront themes of loss, change, and the difficulty of moving forward.

Antonia San Juan, renowned for her roles in 'All About My Mother' and 'La que se avecina,' will also feature in a supporting capacity, with casting for other roles still in progress. Director Guillermo Polo describes the film as a character-focused piece exploring a young woman's journey as she confronts a past she had tried to escape. He emphasizes the film's blend of dark humor and emotional realism, addressing generational conflicts, setbacks, and the universal human need for belonging. Polo views it as a personal narrative with broad appeal, serving as a heartfelt tribute to the art of cinema.

The project is currently in an advanced stage of development, with a planned filming schedule for late 2026 or early 2027. It has already secured selective funding from the Spanish Film Institute ICAA and has received support from various development and industry initiatives, including Málaga’s MAFF, Gijón Film Festival’s Semilleru, and Valencia’s ProMercat. This comprehensive support network underscores the project's potential and its alignment with key industry benchmarks.

Los Hermanos Polo Films brings a diverse portfolio to Málaga, with recent productions that have resonated across both festival circuits and mainstream audiences. Guillermo Polo's inaugural feature, 'Devil Dog Road,' featuring Pablo Molinero, screened at prestigious events like the Miami Film Festival and Mar del Plata. Concurrently, Javier Polo's comedy 'Pet Peeves,' starring Enrique Arce, premiered in the official selection of the 2025 Málaga Festival and achieved international recognition at Raindance in London, showcasing the brothers' versatility and reach in filmmaking.

The involvement of Sideral Cinema significantly enhances the production, aligning 'Video Store 2001' with a company celebrated for its commitment to director-driven Spanish films. Sideral Cinema is known for its strong artistic vision and a strategic approach to festival and market distribution. Their recent successes include Manuel Gómez Pereira’s 'La Cena,' a multi-Goya-nominated film that grossed €3.7 million, and Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez’s 'Saturn Return,' which won the 2024 Golden Biznaga at Málaga and was Spain’s Oscar submission. Other notable projects include Enrique Buleo’s 'Bodegón con fantasmas' and Burnin’ Percebes’ 'El fantástico caso del Golem.'

Sideral Cinema's upcoming slate is equally impressive, featuring Igor Legarreta’s 1930s survival thriller 'Las ciegas hormigas,' Pedro Collantes’ 'Haiku Driver' in pre-production, Álvaro López Alba’s family drama 'Tres días de verano,' and the developing projects 'A morte nos teus ollos' and 'En carne viva.' This robust pipeline reflects Sideral Cinema's continued influence and commitment to diverse and impactful cinematic storytelling, positioning 'Video Store 2001' within a strong network of quality Spanish productions.
