Bungie's "Marathon" Reveals Homage to "Halo" with Iconic Weaponry

Bungie's latest venture, the extraction shooter "Marathon," is a treasure trove of callbacks and tributes to its revered predecessor, "Halo." More than 16 years after their paths diverged from Microsoft, Bungie demonstrates an unwavering connection to its iconic first-person shooter. This homage isn't just in the game's mechanics, which boast familiar weighted movement, lower gravity, and satisfyingly bouncy grenades, but also in the very design of its weapons. The presence of the "Destroyer shell," reminiscent of a Destiny titan clad in Spartan armor, further solidifies this deep-rooted influence. It's clear that the spirit of "Halo" lives on, woven into the fabric of "Marathon's" gameplay.

Bungie's New "Marathon" Features Classic "Halo" Weapons and Mechanics

In a delightful nod to fans, Bungie's upcoming title, "Marathon," is showcasing a deep-seated connection to its legendary "Halo" series, both in gameplay mechanics and weapon design. This connection, evident over a decade and a half after Bungie's split from Microsoft, highlights the studio's enduring style. Players will notice familiar elements like the substantial feel of movement, reduced gravity, and the satisfying trajectory of grenades—hallmarks of Bungie's distinctive game development. Additionally, a new "Destroyer shell" bears a striking resemblance to a Destiny titan, complete with Spartan armor, further blending the studio's rich history.

However, the most pronounced homage lies within "Marathon's" weapon system. The "CE Tactical Sidearm" clearly draws inspiration from the iconic "Halo" pistol, not just in its distinctive grip, trigger guard, and compact barrel, but also in its name, which subtly references "Combat Evolved." Although its in-game performance in "Marathon" mirrors the more balanced versions found in "Halo" sequels rather than the original's overpowered magnum, it maintains its reliability and accuracy, proving to be a swift and efficient weapon in combat. For those who cherished the potent "Halo 1" magnum, "Marathon" introduces the "Magnum MC." This formidable sidearm delivers heavy damage with significant recoil, capable of neutralizing UESC grunts with a single headshot—a clear callback to its ancestor. Its behavior, however, aligns more closely with a "Destiny" hand cannon.

Another direct link is the "V11 Punch," a semi-automatic weapon that functions as "Marathon's" equivalent of the Plasma Pistol. It fires energy globs that swiftly deplete enemy shields and can be charged for a powerful blast that shatters defenses, replicating a beloved mechanic from "Halo." Bungie has gone even further by incorporating rare attachments that fully transform "Marathon" weapons into their "Halo" counterparts. The "BR33 Volley Rifle," resembling the "Halo 2 Battle Rifle," becomes a formidable hip-fire weapon with the "Lockout Muzzle Brake" attachment, offering enhanced accuracy, stability, and range. Elliott Gray, a "Marathon" UI designer, confirmed this tribute by sharing an image of the "Halo 2 BR" on the legendary Lockout map, accompanied by the caption "Welcome home." Similarly, the "V22 Volt Thrower," an SMG with homing rounds, can be equipped with the "Overcharge Lens" attachment to emulate the "Needler" from "Halo," causing explosive bursts on consecutive hits. While other weapons like the "Hardline PR" precision rifle and the "Longshot" sniper rifle evoke the feel of "Halo Reach's" DMR and classic sniper rifles, and the "Brrt SMG" may hint at the "Halo 2" SMG, their visual and functional differences are more subtle. Nevertheless, "Marathon" stands as a testament to Bungie's consistent design philosophy, particularly its affinity for bullpup rifles, where magazines are invariably placed at the back, top, or sides, never at the front.

This careful integration of familiar elements serves not only as a nostalgic journey for long-time Bungie fans but also as a foundational layer for "Marathon's" unique identity. The developers' ability to weave in these tributes while crafting a new experience demonstrates a deep understanding of their own legacy and the desires of their player base. It leaves one pondering how many other subtle references might be hidden within the game, waiting to be discovered, and how these connections will shape the overall player experience.
