Gamers eagerly awaiting the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 face significant disappointment as Take-Two Interactive has announced an indefinite halt to its development. This decision impacts fans who were looking forward to experiencing the acclaimed looter-shooter on Nintendo's latest console, following its successful release on other major platforms.

Development Pause for Nintendo Switch 2

In a recent quarterly earnings call, Take-Two Interactive confirmed that it has paused the development of Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2. This announcement signifies a major setback for players anticipating the game's release on the platform. The title, which launched in September 2025 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, was initially projected for an October release on the Switch 2. However, with the passing of the original release window, updates regarding its availability became scarce, leading to speculation that has now been confirmed.

Take-Two spokesperson Alan Lewis further clarified the situation, stating the company made a challenging choice to suspend the SKU's development. Despite this, Lewis emphasized Take-Two's continued focus on delivering high-quality post-launch content and optimizing the existing game versions. He also reiterated the publisher's commitment to collaborating with Nintendo, citing upcoming titles like PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26 for the Switch 2 as proof of their ongoing partnership. While the 2K store website still lists Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2, pre-order options have been disabled, casting a shadow of doubt over its eventual release.

Impact on Nintendo Gaming Community

The decision to halt development is a significant blow to the Nintendo gaming community, many of whom were eagerly anticipating the opportunity to play the latest installment of the Borderlands series. Borderlands 4 had garnered positive reception for its innovative approach, refreshing a long-standing franchise formula. The game was celebrated for introducing new elements and revitalizing the looter-shooter genre, making its absence on the Switch 2 particularly regrettable for Nintendo enthusiasts.

This development leaves Nintendo players without access to a title that critics lauded for its fresh take on a 15-year-old series. The excitement surrounding the possibility of experiencing Borderlands 4's reimagined gameplay on a portable console like the Switch 2 has now been dashed. While Take-Two assures future support for the Nintendo platform with other titles, the indefinite delay of Borderlands 4 represents a missed opportunity for many players to engage with a highly anticipated and critically praised game.
