The Black Women Film Network (BWFN) is set to host its annual summit in Atlanta, a significant event dedicated to celebrating the achievements of Black women in the entertainment industry. This year, the spotlight shines brightly on two distinguished actresses, S. Epatha Merkerson and Danielle Brooks, who will be formally recognized for their exceptional careers and profound influence. The summit, conceptualized around the theme "Unbreakable Lens: The Power of Community," underscores the vital importance of collective strength, collaborative efforts, and a unified vision that propels Black women forward, both on and off screen. Beyond the accolades, the event will serve as a dynamic forum for mentorship, advocacy, and providing crucial industry access, fostering a supportive environment for emerging talents and seasoned professionals alike.
Black Women Film Network Summit to Honor S. Epatha Merkerson and Danielle Brooks in Atlanta
On Saturday, March 21, at the distinguished Loudermilk Center in Atlanta, the Black Women Film Network will hold its much-anticipated annual summit. This esteemed organization, established in 1997, has consistently championed Black women in entertainment, offering a robust platform for career development and industry engagement. This year’s summit will particularly celebrate two luminaries: S. Epatha Merkerson and Danielle Brooks.
S. Epatha Merkerson, a celebrated actress, will be presented with the On Her Shoulders Preservation award. Her remarkable career is highlighted by her iconic portrayal of Lt. Anita Van Buren in NBC’s acclaimed series “Law & Order.” Merkerson's talent has also earned her a Golden Globe, SAG, and Emmy for her powerful performance in “Lackawanna Blues.” Currently, she continues to captivate audiences in NBC’s popular drama “Chicago Med,” part of the expansive “One Chicago” franchise, and is a two-time Tony Award nominee, showcasing her versatility across various mediums.
Danielle Brooks is slated to receive the AcceleratHER Award, a testament to her extraordinary range and transformative impact in television, film, and theater. Her notable roles include her SAG Award-winning performance as Taystee in “Orange is the New Black” and her Tony-nominated role as Sofia in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” Brooks reprised this iconic character in the 2023 film adaptation, which garnered her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, solidifying her status as a powerhouse performer.
In addition to these prestigious honors, the Black Women Film Network will acknowledge other influential figures within the industry. Sheila Ducksworth, executive producer of “Beyond the Gates” and president of CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, will be honored with the ProducHER Award. Felicia Pride, the showrunner and executive producer of “A Different World,” will receive the StorytellHER Award. Angela Cannon, Executive VP of Networks & Content Strategy at UP Entertainment and General Manager of AspireTV+, will be recognized with the PowerbrokHER Award. Lastly, Vanzil Burke, the visionary founder of Burke Entertainment Partners, will be presented with the AmpliphiHER Award.
Beyond the awards ceremony, the summit will feature an array of insightful programming designed to explore the ever-evolving entertainment landscape. Attendees can look forward to dynamic panel discussions covering crucial topics such as leveraging branded content for financing, utilizing artificial intelligence tools in film and digital production, navigating the complexities of documentary distribution, monetizing short-form content, and charting a writer’s journey from initial pitch to greenlight. Chiquita Lockely, board chair of the Black Women Film Network, emphasized that the summit is equally about strategic development as it is about celebration. She stated, "We are creating a space where established powerhouses and emerging voices converge to exchange knowledge, build access, and shape the future of storytelling. Honoring Black women who have sustained excellence across decades while equipping the next generation with practical tools is central to our mission."
