The Bengali feature film, 'Pinjar,' directed by Dr. Rudrajit Roy, a Kolkata-based physician and filmmaker, has achieved a significant milestone by securing an international distribution agreement with Hazelnut Media. This Singaporean impact production firm is set to amplify the movie's global presence. Beyond its cinematic release, this collaboration will also fuel a powerful real-world initiative, providing educational opportunities for young girls in the remote regions of West Bengal.

Award-Winning Bengali Film 'Pinjar' Forges International Alliance and Girls' Education Program

On June 24, 2026, in the vibrant city of Kolkata, a unique ceremony featuring the release of white doves, symbolizing freedom and new beginnings, marked a groundbreaking partnership. Hazelnut Media officially announced its acquisition of international distribution rights for 'Pinjar,' a poignant Bengali drama. This collaboration extends beyond film distribution, as a portion of the proceeds will be dedicated to a vital girls' education initiative in rural West Bengal, embodying the film's core message of liberation. The film, produced by Chasing Dreams Films in conjunction with Bell Jar Films, is scheduled to premiere in Indian cinemas on July 10, 2026.

Translated as 'The Cage,' 'Pinjar' delves into the interconnected lives of five individuals grappling with various forms of confinement. These characters include Tarak, a bird-catcher whose livelihood ironically depends on trapping creatures yearning for freedom; his daughter Jhimli, growing up in a world that stifles her potential; Paromita, a widowed teacher who masks her solitude with routine; Shefali, a working wife concealing her pain beneath a facade of silence; and Iqbal, a Muslim migrant navigating a city that offers little welcome. Their individual struggles are mirrored by the recurring motif of a wild bird, captured and caged, representing their collective desire for emancipation. The film boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Mamata Shankar, Joy Sengupta, and Ishan Mazumder. Manas Bhattacharyya lent his artistic eye as director of photography, while Ratul Shankar composed the film's musical score, with music rights acquired by Pluto Music.

Hazelnut Media's co-CEOs, Olivier A. Dock and Isabella Sreyashii Sen, expressed their unwavering belief in the film's capacity to inspire change and connect with audiences globally. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring the film's story of resilience and freedom resonates worldwide, simultaneously generating tangible social impact. 'Pinjar' has already garnered considerable recognition since its world premiere at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival in 2025, subsequently being screened at prestigious events such as the Asian Film Festival Barcelona and the London Bengali Film Festival. Dr. Rudrajit Roy received a special jury mention for best director at the Third Eye Asian Film Festival in Mumbai, further solidifying the film's critical acclaim.

Dr. Roy articulated that the genesis of 'Pinjar' was the powerful imagery of a caged bird, a potent metaphor for the societal and personal boundaries that shape human existence. His artistic objective was to encourage viewers to contemplate the self-imposed and external limitations they face and the intrinsic human yearning to transcend them. Hazelnut Media is actively planning a comprehensive international release strategy, encompassing theatrical screenings and festival participation across South and Southeast Asia, as well as diaspora markets in the U.K., the Middle East, and Singapore, before a broader mainstream theatrical rollout. This strategic approach leverages Ms. Sen's extensive experience as an independent female theatrical distributor in South and Southeast Asia, having overseen nearly 120 international film releases in the region, alongside Mr. Dock's three decades of expertise spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The duo previously collaborated on the India–Singapore co-production 'Early Days' and the Iran–Singapore production 'Tadji,' and are co-creators of Legendia, an initiative dedicated to reintroducing classic cinema to contemporary audiences.

Animesh Ganguly, associate producer at Bell Jar Films, underscored the profound satisfaction of witnessing Hazelnut Media champion the film globally and connect it with the crucial cause of girls' education, affirming the fundamental purpose behind the creation of 'Pinjar.' Dr. Roy, a practicing critical care physician in Kolkata, meticulously developed the film's narrative over two years through immersive fieldwork in rural villages and slum communities across West Bengal. His previous short films, including the sci-fi 'Wavelength,' the drama 'Man and Wife,' and the documentary 'Chasing My Dream,' have collectively earned numerous international accolades and selections at Oscar-qualifying festivals.

This initiative exemplifies the transformative power of art when combined with social responsibility. 'Pinjar' not only offers a compelling narrative about the universal human struggle for freedom but also actively contributes to empowering a new generation through education. The film's success in securing international distribution and fostering a humanitarian project highlights the growing trend of cinema as a catalyst for positive change. It inspires us to consider how storytelling can transcend entertainment, becoming a powerful tool for advocacy and community development. By supporting girls' education, the project promises to break cycles of disadvantage, demonstrating that the pursuit of freedom depicted on screen can translate into tangible opportunities in the real world.
