Asia to Lead Global Crude Distillation Unit Expansion by 2030

Asia is poised to become the global frontrunner in expanding crude distillation unit (CDU) capacity over the period spanning 2026 to 2030. This region is expected to contribute nearly 40% of the worldwide increase in CDU capabilities. This significant surge is primarily attributed to robust domestic demand for petroleum products and strategic investments aimed at constructing new refining facilities and enhancing existing ones. The expansion of CDU capacity is critical for bolstering energy security and satisfying the escalating consumption of refined products within Asia's rapidly developing economies.

China is anticipated to be a major force within Asia's CDU capacity augmentation, projected to account for almost a quarter of the continent's total additions by 2030. This substantial growth is underpinned by extensive investments in modernizing its refining infrastructure to cater to both internal market needs and to boost export potential. Key refining developments, such as the Caofeidian V, Gulei, and Lianyungang II projects, are central to China's strategy for increasing CDU capacity before the decade's end.

The Caofeidian V refinery exemplifies China's commitment to expanding its CDU capabilities, with an expected operational capacity of 401,000 barrels per day (bpd) by 2029. Hebei Xinhua Petrochemical, the sole proprietor and prospective operator, is overseeing this integrated coking refinery project, which is currently pending regulatory approval.

Following closely behind China, India is forecast to add nearly 2.2 million barrels per day (mbbl/d) of CDU capacity by 2030. This impressive growth is propelled by escalating demand for refined products across the transportation, petrochemical, and industrial sectors. A notable project within India is the CDU expansion at the Vadinar refinery, slated to increase capacity by 515,000 bpd by 2029. This project, with an estimated capital expenditure of $6 billion, has already secured approval and is in its planning phase.

The Asian continent is setting the pace for global crude distillation unit expansion, driven by the strategic efforts of nations like China and India to meet their burgeoning energy demands and solidify their positions in the international petroleum market. These substantial investments in refining infrastructure underscore a concerted regional push towards greater energy independence and sustained economic development through enhanced production of refined products.
