Emerging talent Ashley Padilla, recognized for her standout performances on Saturday Night Live, has officially joined the cast of Universal Pictures' upcoming romantic comedy, The Catch. She will be starring alongside acclaimed actors Emma Stone and Chris Pine. The project, helmed by Dave McCary, who previously directed segments for SNL and is married to Stone, is poised to begin production in New York this July.

While specific plot details remain largely under wraps, insiders characterize the film as a unique fusion of Bull Durham and Notting Hill. In this narrative, Emma Stone is cast as a character infamous in the baseball world, and Padilla will portray her on-screen sibling. The script's most recent iteration was penned by Jen Statsky and Travis Helwig, building upon an original spec script by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin.

Scheduled for a theatrical release on May 21, 2027, the film boasts a robust team of producers. Stone herself, along with McCary and Ali Herting, are producing through their company, Fruit Tree, which holds a first-look deal with Universal. Additionally, Shawn Levy and Dan Levine are involved via their 21 Laps, fresh off the success of Backrooms. Michael H. Weber, known for his work on 500 Days of Summer, is also among the producers. Padilla, a former assistant to Diane Keaton and an alumnus of The Groundlings comedy troupe, joined SNL in 2024 during its 50th season, rapidly gaining recognition for her distinctive comedic timing, which has been lauded by publications such as the New York Times. This role in The Catch represents her significant entry into major studio feature films.

This casting news highlights the continuous evolution of talent within the entertainment industry, showcasing how versatile performers from various comedic backgrounds are finding their place in mainstream cinema. It also underscores the collaborative spirit that often brings together established stars and rising talents, promising fresh perspectives and compelling storytelling for audiences worldwide. The anticipation surrounding The Catch not only stems from its impressive cast but also from its intriguing premise, suggesting a romantic comedy that aims to blend sports, humor, and heartfelt moments, offering a delightful cinematic experience that celebrates new beginnings and unexpected connections.
