Art Directors Guild Honors Cinematic and Television Excellence in Los Angeles

On the evening of Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the opulent InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) hosted its landmark 30th Excellence in Production Design Awards. The distinguished accolades were bestowed upon a selection of exceptional films, including "Frankenstein" (Period Feature Film, Production Designer: Tamara Deverell), "One Battle After Another" (Contemporary Feature Film, Production Designer: Florencia Martin), and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" (Fantasy Feature Film, Production Designer: Kasra Farahani), which all garnered top honors in their respective film categories. The animated feature "KPop Demon Hunters," with production designers Mingjue Helen Chen and Dave Bleich, continued its impressive winning streak by securing the ADG Award for Animated Feature Film, adding to its previous triumphs at the Annie Awards and Visual Effects Society. For television, "Andor" (Production Designer: Luke Hull) was recognized for One-Hour Fantasy Single-Camera Series, "Severance" (Production Designer: Jeremy Hindle) for One-Hour Contemporary Single-Camera Series, and "The Studio" (Production Designer: Julie Berghoff) for Half-Hour Single-Camera Series. Additionally, Florencia Martin received a second award for her work on the Prada "Galleria Bag" commercial. Esteemed filmmaker Jon M. Chu was honored with the Cinematic Imagery Award, and Rep. Laura Friedman (D-CA) received the President's Award. The late Thomas E. Sanders was inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame, while Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Jann Engel, Bo Welch, Tom Southwell, and Stephen McNally.

The Art Directors Guild Awards serve as a crucial platform, not just for celebrating outstanding individual achievements, but also for highlighting the profound impact of production design on the immersive experience of film and television. The speeches delivered by honorees, particularly Jon M. Chu's eloquent description of filmmaking as an "empathy exercise" and designers as "explorers," resonated deeply. It reminded attendees and the broader industry that the meticulous creation of visual worlds transcends mere aesthetics; it is about building bridges to human emotion and understanding. The dedication of individuals like Rep. Laura Friedman, advocating for the industry's future through initiatives like a national film tax credit, underscores the collective responsibility to nurture and protect this vital art form. Ultimately, the awards reinforce the idea that every detail on screen contributes to a larger narrative, shaping our perceptions and enriching our cultural landscape.
