The Anime Expo in downtown Los Angeles recently concluded, drawing tens of thousands of enthusiasts who immersed themselves in the vibrant world of anime. A striking observation for executives at Crunchyroll, Sony Corp.’s prominent anime streaming service, was the widespread presence of homemade witch hats, a clear homage to their popular series, “Witch Hat Atelier,” which premiered just months prior. This rapid adoption by fans underscores the deep engagement and commitment within the anime community, especially as they prepared for North America’s largest anime gathering.

This year’s Anime Expo marked a culmination of an exceptional twelve-month period for the anime industry, characterized by remarkable business expansion and heightened cultural visibility. Notable successes include Netflix’s “K-Pop Demon Hunters” movie, which broke viewership records and garnered international awards, highlighting the artistic excellence of anime production. Additionally, Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll celebrated a box office hit with “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.” These achievements reflect Crunchyroll's significant influence in cultivating a thriving global niche, prompting increased investment in anime content from various streaming platforms.

Established two decades ago by a group of anime aficionados, Crunchyroll was acquired by Sony Corp. in 2021, merging with its Funimation group to form an anime entertainment powerhouse. The recent surge in anime’s popularity has brought well-deserved recognition to many Japanese artists, writers, and directors who have long contributed to the medium. At Anime Expo, Crunchyroll hosted an event showcasing new productions, where creators like director Yuichiro Hayashi and voice actors Taihi Kimura and Aleks Le were celebrated, alongside emerging talent like Raiki Murao, whose work was met with enthusiastic applause, highlighting the strong sense of unity among fans.

The growth in the anime sector has propelled Crunchyroll’s subscriber base to 21 million, demonstrating a global appeal with significant increases in regions such as Brazil, India, the U.S., and the Middle East. The comprehensive ecosystem supporting anime, including manga and graphic novels, was prominently displayed at the expo. Crunchyroll actively fosters this community through theatrical releases, aiming to create a blend of at-home streaming and communal in-person experiences. The medium’s strong visual storytelling and diverse themes resonate deeply with fans, who find not just entertainment but also a sense of identity, community, and belonging. This dedication to connecting fans with their beloved stories and characters, through various platforms and events, is a testament to the enduring and expanding power of anime as a cultural phenomenon.
