Amazon's Prime Video service is adjusting its pricing structure, with a focus on an enhanced ad-free experience. This strategic move by the e-commerce giant reflects a broader trend within the streaming industry, where platforms are seeking to optimize revenue while delivering value to their growing subscriber base.

Experience Premium Entertainment: Prime Video Ultra Redefines Ad-Free Streaming

The Evolution of Ad-Free Viewing: Amazon's New Prime Video Ultra

Amazon has announced an impending price adjustment for its ad-free Prime Video service. As of April 10, subscribers opting for an uninterrupted viewing experience will see their monthly fee increase by $2, making the new cost $4.99. This change is accompanied by a rebranding of the tier, which will now be known as "Prime Video Ultra."

Enhanced Features for the Discerning Viewer

The newly introduced "Prime Video Ultra" is not merely a price hike but also brings a suite of upgraded functionalities. Customers will benefit from the ability to stream content concurrently on up to five different devices. Additionally, the tier will support stunning 4K streaming quality and allow for as many as 100 downloads, catering to users who prefer offline viewing. These enhancements aim to provide a more comprehensive and flexible viewing experience for premium subscribers.

Adapting to the Ad-Supported Model

Amazon initially integrated advertisements into Prime Video in 2024. This decision prompted users seeking an ad-free environment to pay an additional monthly fee on top of their existing Prime membership, which currently costs $139 annually in the U.S. The latest price adjustment and feature upgrade for the ad-free tier further refine Amazon's approach to monetizing its popular streaming service.

Prime Video's Expanding Global Footprint

Despite the introduction of advertisements and subsequent price increases, Prime Video continues to demonstrate significant growth in its audience reach. According to Amazon's latest financial disclosures, the platform boasts an average ad-supported viewership exceeding 315 million individuals worldwide. This represents a substantial increase from approximately 200 million viewers recorded in April 2024, underscoring the platform's sustained popularity and expanding market presence.

A Wider Industry Trend: Streaming Services Raising Prices

Amazon's decision to raise prices is not an isolated event but rather indicative of a broader trend sweeping across the streaming industry. Several prominent streaming providers have implemented similar price increases for their subscription plans. For instance, Paramount+ adjusted its pricing in January 2026, with its ad-supported Essential plan rising to $9 per month and its ad-free Premium plan to $14 per month. Similarly, Netflix increased the cost of its standard ad-free plan to $17.99 per month and its premium tier to $24.99 in January 2025. The Walt Disney Co. also implemented price hikes for Disney+ in October 2025, elevating its ad-supported plan to $11.99 per month and its ad-free tier to $18.99. These collective actions highlight a strategic shift within the industry to enhance revenue streams in a competitive and evolving market.

Market Performance of Amazon Shares

Following these announcements, Amazon's shares closed at $207.67, experiencing a slight decline of 0.89% on Friday, with a further slip of 0.18% to $207.30 in after-hours trading, as reported by Benzinga Pro. Analysis from Benzinga Edge Stock Rankings indicates a downward price trend for Amazon across short, medium, and long-term periods, despite its Quality score being in the 71st percentil
