Aisling Camps: Engineering Innovation in Knitwear Design

Ruth E. Carter

Oscar-winning costume designer for films like "Black Panther," authoring works on the intersection of fashion, culture, and history.

Aisling Camps, a designer born in Trinidad, has pursued an unconventional route to establishing her fashion label, marked by her unique background in mechanical engineering with a focus on sustainability. Despite an initial career in engineering post-graduation from Columbia University in 2008, a deep-seated artistic drive led her to venture into fashion. This pivotal shift saw her enrolling in night classes at FIT, eventually leading to the birth of the 'Aisling Camps' label after visa complications necessitated her return to Trinidad. Her journey highlights a remarkable transition from a technical discipline to a creative one, underscoring her adaptability and passion for design.

In Trinidad, Camps faced distinct obstacles in her quest to become a knitwear designer, notably the tropical climate which challenged traditional knitwear concepts and the scarcity of conventional materials. Instead of wool or cashmere, she innovatively utilized linen and tightly spun cotton, adapting her craft to the 95-degree heat. This resourcefulness became a hallmark of her brand, influencing her designs to this day, as seen in her Fall 2026 ready-to-wear collection which masterfully combined substantial knits with versatile, light layers. Her engineering acumen proved invaluable in this creative process, allowing her to approach knitwear design with a programmer's precision, particularly in adapting to global production demands in Italy.

Camps' brand has rapidly evolved, now stocked in major retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Nordstrom, while she personally handcrafts 20% of her creations. Her dedication to scaling the business led her to Italy, where she immersed herself in understanding production processes and language, refining her brand's manufacturing capabilities. Recently, she celebrated her New York Fashion Week debut with an intimate presentation that captivated attendees. Her collection stood out in a minimalist fashion landscape, showcasing pieces like a compact macramé capelet and a knitted hoodie paired with a string bikini-like top, deliberately challenging seasonal norms and traditional perceptions of knitwear to introduce an element of delightful tension.

Aisling Camps' story is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary thinking and the boundless possibilities that arise when passion meets perseverance. Her journey from engineering to knitwear design exemplifies how embracing challenges and unconventional approaches can lead to groundbreaking innovation and inspire new perspectives within established fields. It reminds us that true creativity often flourishes at the intersection of diverse experiences, proving that success is not merely about following a predefined path, but about forging a unique one that reflects one's authentic vision and dedication.
